The Sand and Rust Floor Basket

This is the basket that lives on the floor. Big enough to mean it — 12" x 12", the kind of scale that holds blankets, firewood, the things a room needs within reach but not on display. Sisal woven tight enough to carry that weight without losing its shape.

The color is warm and earthy, somewhere between sand and the Machakos soil it came from. Orange handles sit on the rim — the same warm logic as the body, turned up slightly, functional and considered at the same time.

The slight irregularities in the weave surface, the places where the tension shifted by a fraction, the evidence of hands rather than machinery. These are not flaws. They are the record of how this was made — and on a floor basket, at this scale, they give the object a presence that a perfect surface never could. Something that looks like it was made by a person feels different in a room than something that doesn't.

Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Keep from prolonged moisture. Each basket is unique — at this size, the natural variation in both the sisal and the weave will be more visible than in smaller pieces, which makes every floor basket its own object rather than a unit in a set.
